I guess I just dont get how ng works :/

Posted by ToasterDemon Aug. 29, 2008 @ 7:45 PM EDT

EDIT: The scores been going up. When I wrote this it had a 3.4, but its all still relevant

How ng users vote on submissions is very puzzleing. When I spend litterally, 1 hour making a game, it scores well and gets front page, but when I spend 2 months on a game, putting in several hours a day, it gets a 3.4. I dont mean to complain, but its just really annoying.

which 2 games are you talking about? BTW escape from slugville is awesome

Aug. 29, 2008 | 7:48 PM ToasterDemon responds:

Rotation was made in 1 hour, and escape from slugville took 2 months.

So true...

Yeah :/

Aug. 29, 2008 | 7:49 PM jakobhummelen says:

NG users always have been fickle (sp?), anyway, the point is that you have to try to stay fresh and original. Make your submission stand out and it will get a high score naturally (and then get featured where it is likely to get even higher points).

Also, try to keep animating/coding for yourself and not for your fans per se. Keeping this a thing you do for you will ensure that you will stay motivated to do some great stuff :)

Aug. 29, 2008 | 7:57 PM ToasterDemon responds:

I did absolutely everything you mentioned in my game. I made it original. You wont find many game that are similar to mine. I was trying my best to be original. It does stand out. Unlike a lot of my games I spent a bunch of time into graphics. The graphics and animation in this game are the best Ive done. And animation and codnig were for myself. I did keep myself motivated.

Alternatively, when I made a very unoriginal game in 1 hour. Put no time into making it stand out or be original, and was made so quick that I didnt need to worry about staying motivated, it does well.

I know I probably sound like a whiney douche, but its true. Im not complaining at all that rotation got front page, or did well. Im just saying that if that did well, a bigger game shouldnt bomb.

Aug. 29, 2008 | 8:18 PM Wiiporter says:

:( That's upsetting. I hope your next big one does better.

Aug. 29, 2008 | 8:20 PM ToasterDemon responds:

Not sure if I will make another big one, but at least this ones going up a bit

Aug. 29, 2008 | 8:41 PM KyleDaFox says:

If it's any consolation, I liked Escape from Slugville and it deserves 3.7+

Aug. 29, 2008 | 8:53 PM ToasterDemon responds:

Thanks :P Im not to upset abot the score now, but I was when it was at a 3.4 :P
Thanks though :)

Aug. 29, 2008 | 8:54 PM Coolio-Niato says:

FINE. TAKE MY 5.

stuff like this makes me scared to ever submit my TBS =(

Aug. 29, 2008 | 9:15 PM ToasterDemon responds:

haha, thanks :P And Im sure your TBS will do great. I know youve been working on it for a long time and the screens make it looks really nice :)

Aug. 29, 2008 | 8:55 PM djmrules says:

Why are you bitching? A 3.4 Is a good score. What do you expect out of it a 4.2?

Aug. 29, 2008 | 9:14 PM ToasterDemon responds:

If you submitted flash, youde know what a good score is, and what a bad score is.

Aug. 29, 2008 | 8:56 PM I-smel says:

The more stuff you have in a game, the more potential there is for people to not like it. That's how people vote.

Like for instance- Let's say you had a fighting game with 6 characters, and all the characters were great. That'd do pretty well. Now if you had a fighting game with 12 characters and TWO OF THEM were bad, you'd get reviews like NICE, I GAVE IT A FOUR BECAUSE CHARACTER X AND Y KIND OF SUCKED.

So if everything in a game is potentially a flaw, then the only safe thing to do is to make really unsubstantial games. That's how shit goes on Newgrounds and it sucks.

Aug. 29, 2008 | 9:16 PM ToasterDemon responds:

Thats very true

Aug. 29, 2008 | 9:04 PM I-smel says:

Alternatively, maybe your best isn't good enough.

Aug. 29, 2008 | 9:06 PM gankro says:

The problem at hand is that you're using twisted developer logic, the gamer does not see what is not clearly visible, such as effort... so while you put lots of effort into the game it was not intuitive or fun...

ex: two artists, one draws a beautiful, all be it simple, butterfly, the other draws a black circle made out of thousands of small circles, but it just looks like one big circle... everyone likes the butterfly more... BUT HOW CAN THAT BE!?!? THE CIRCLE TOOK MORE TIME AND EFFORT TO MAKE!!!!!

the flaws in your game were these: the puzzles made little to no sense, there were glitches, everything felt too slow and dreary...

elaboration:

puzzles:
The puzzles simply made you wander around the map until you bump into the necessary item which does something that is unclear until you stumble upon the next correct room... ex: the down arrow thing: I have no idea what it did, I'm going to assume it let me push that rock even though I never tried to push it before hand, also the rising acid... once I reach the top I find it illogical that the only way out is to get "hit"

glitches:
-holding down space while doing something often teleported me to a random location (most apparent in the underground lift room)
-the shooty thing (next to the giant slug room)'s bullets do not disappear if you leave the room
-sometimes the boss bot does not jump as if it's stuck in the ground
-the character can slowly push through the platforms in the room where you push the rock
slowness:
-the character moves too slow
-the animations feel slow and awkward
-some of the music is kinda drab and dreary
-the art enhances this feeling although it is admittedly quality (kinda like the whole artist example)
-the platforming is unnecessarily difficult

overall it leaves the player feeling unsatisfied and bored... you can't just make a game and expect that your effort reflects quality... you need to have fun elements and themes that reflect the audience of your niche

Aug. 29, 2008 | 9:18 PM ToasterDemon responds:

Youre right. I always look at thing from a developers POV, and rate submissions based on that. I usually dont even notice the small details in my own work that others complain about.

Aug. 29, 2008 | 10:05 PM Emanhattan says:

I have that same problem too. I made an equation for it

Score of animation= -EFFORT

the less effort you put on a flash, the better score its gonna get. BUt hey that is just during the first hours. after the trophies are given, the animation recieves the REAL score it deserves.

I made an animation for almlost 3 months, and it got 3.1 when out of judgement. Eventually it rised up.

I made ANOTHER animation, I worked on it 5 hours. It got 3.5 : /

Crazy world huh?

Aug. 29, 2008 | 11:03 PM ToasterDemon responds:

Yeah, your equation is actually pretty accurate :P

Aug. 29, 2008 | 10:20 PM Balvuc says:

Not really a paradox or anything.

If you attempt to make something bad, it will be judged in a 0-5 score of bad things.
If you attempt to make something good, it will be judged in a 0-5 score of good things(exceptions allowed...).

As you can see your work was judged as a good work, and therefore had negative points that wouldn't be seen in a no-effort mini-game.

Aug. 29, 2008 | 11:53 PM FrozenFire says:

Holy shit it's out!
:D

Damn that sucks you didn't get the score you deserved. >:C
NG users need to learn what good original material is, and why it's so damn good.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 12:13 AM FrozenFire says:

Whoops I reviewed and clicked 9, :C

I meant 10 ;D

Aug. 30, 2008 | 12:27 AM Slintas says:

Why do you care about the score anyways? It's views you should worry about.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 12:34 AM PolishMatt says:

Well, they we're too different games. It's a bit hard to compare the two aside from the fact that they are both indeed games. The majority of people on this site will like Rotation because of it's super simplicity and catchy music, graphics and game play.

Slugville seems a bit.. slow paced and just a another '2D scroller'. Newgrounds is extremely strange and blind to true hard work and talent, main reason why I don't want to submit anything, as I get very passionate about my work and I don't want to see it just get a score of 3 or whatever.

But this problem does'nt just affect Newgrounds.com, it affects all sorts of sites like DeviantArt and even Youtube. All the popular deviants that get front pages are just anime pictures and nude shots.

There has been tens of dozens of deviants that I have seen get insane amount of popularity and that appear half ass'd and connected one way or thy other to a trend that was popular back then (Ex. Rick Roll). There is no way to win.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 2:07 AM Creakskiey says:

I think that, like me, people are board of these platformer games like Escape From Slugville, which are all the same. You jump, you walk, you skip on monsters. Still, they take very much time to make.

But there are simple yet original games, like Rotation, that been made in 1 hour but it's very fun and addictive.
It'll actually be even more awesome if it had a high scores board!

Hope I helped :)

Aug. 30, 2008 | 3:38 AM Dazmi says:

It depends on how much people like the game, not how much work you put into it.

Just because you spend more time on it, it doesn't make it any funner.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 5:51 AM Incognitus says:

NG users are especially fickle regarding games. It's always been tougher to make a popular game than a popular animation. You're doing well, but on a site with younger, more ignorant people deciding the fates of submissions, it's going to be a struggle at times.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 7:19 AM RWA says:

I agree,really annoying...

Aug. 30, 2008 | 7:47 AM Lazyfeet says:

I know! I spent about 2-3 hours making a flash, 'An unsuccessful valentine 2', and it got like 3.60 at first, then I spent 3 months on 'A very CAHJ Christmas' and it only got 3.40 at first.

Eh well, the Christmas thing was a lot more fun I have to admit.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 7:49 AM Lazyfeet says:

Oh and yeah, count yourself lucky. I've made like 9 solo submissions and worked my ass off on nearly all of them and I've never won ANYTHING.

No front page, no award, no publicity, about 1-20 favorites. I'd be jumping for joy if I got something... anything!

Aug. 30, 2008 | 8:36 AM Murad136 says:

It's because NG has simple minds. Rotation was simple easy and fun. People love that type of stuff. But then there is a quarter of NG that likes game like escape from slugsville, which was awesome.

But what I think a good flash artist needs is flash for all type of tastes!

So your doing great! Keep it up!

Aug. 30, 2008 | 10:04 AM exotworking says:

Strange. Your game was really cool, at least wort a 3.8 or higher. Bad luck. Not always quality succeedes the way it should. Well, I voted 5.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 10:10 AM Jimp says:

Yeah I hate it too. its a soul destroying feeling, my coder and I worked on Fowl Play for weeks, literally just sat in our house and worked on it all day every day. Its an original idea, ive never seen a game quite like it and im confident we did it well and ironed out pretty much all of the bugs, and I was SO pleased with the graphics.

But it only got a score of 3.5 and about a thousand views, where basic games where youve gotta dodge fridges gets the same score and front page...

Anyway its just the way things work here. Youve just got to keep going and when you do release something which does really well, the feeling will be awesome. Even if a project doesnt do as well as you might have hoped, youve still improved your skills and gained so much from making it.

No everything will do amazingly well, you just need to keep at it. You cant honestly say that you worked on a game for 2 months solid just to see what a load of 13 years playing online games think of it? The self satisfaction of finishing a big project as well as you can is a lot more rewarding that a bunch of cunts opinion of it :P

Anyway, your next game will be better because of what you learnt from this one :)

Aug. 30, 2008 | 12:20 PM ToasterDemon responds:

Youre right. I did learn a lot out of this game, and had fun making it.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 10:21 AM cumSum says:

It happens all the time, most people will enjoy a fresh mini-game more than an overly complicated RTS, for instance. Instead of whining, you should spend the next hour making a game.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 1:50 PM Kenney says:

Production time has nothing to do with the outcome of the game, if you happen to have a good idea and it's rather simple to produce than it might score higher than those feature rich RPG games.

Newgrounds users are still dumb, put in some boobies, blood, guns and gangsta style and you got a 4.00+ game. I will not cripple and make ultra-violent games though, even if it means I will never be a popular NG artist.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 2:30 PM WAaAzZAaA says:

its because some people know that you're on the maxgames contest, so they vote low :P

also, HEY! its been a while dude!

Aug. 30, 2008 | 3:42 PM Genet says:

great game but a bit glitchy and feels unfinished, i will leave you an appropriate review next day, also do not forget, most of the newgrounds users had no experience with flash/vector drawing/programming at all, therefore they simply are not able to judge your effort.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 3:49 PM Cormamin520 says:

Okay, well...after playing both, there's probably a simple reason for this; a lot of part-time gamers jump on here to enjoy simple little time consuming games that require little use of their brains. And, while Slugville didn't catch my attention especially, it pissed me off. Your platforms in rotation responded to the tiniest touch, while in Slugville, I phased through things that were supposed to be solid (e.g. platforms; the first three took me five minutes to actually ascend). While I didn't enjoy Rotation very much (it's just not my kind of game, sorry), I had a few issues with Slugville as well. It's a good game, in its own respect, but probably not what the people looking for a quick and easy time waste are looking for.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 5:32 PM TW1NS0UL says:

I'll comment again once I've played both games, but the length at which you make or work on something is not equal to its value. I've seen many a crappy game which was actually worked on for long amounts of time, and games that were simply and quickly made that were gold. The time behind it is not what matters, but the game itself.

Then again, I still haven't played either game, I'll comment again when I do(which'll be very soon)

Aug. 30, 2008 | 5:38 PM Dekathos says:

Except for the thing about spending an hour on a flash. It's not possible for me to spend that little time on something. Last time I did anything like that it got blammed.

...

Well uhh I guess it's not the same. Also bottom line is most "voters" don't make flash and could care less about the time or effort you put into something. For one thing, they really have no idea, anyway and haven't the slightest clue what constitutes an effortless flash or not. They mostly just want cheep laughs about video games with lots of badly voice acted swearing. When you get reviews like this "lulz that wuz randum funni xD I luv sonic!" then pat yourself on the back you've gain the support of the model newgrounds user.

Question is, do you want that?

Aug. 30, 2008 | 6:03 PM TW1NS0UL says:

Escape from Slugville was actuallt pretty good, although the "puzzles" were a bit overly simple. The graphics were georgeuos, though, I don't care what other people say about the walking animation.

I do not make Flash, however, I do have a gamemaking engine, which runs somewhat similar to Actionscript. I have made some Flash before, however, they weren't made at my home, but at my cousin's whenever I slept over. They weren't really good, but I do some (very little) Flash experience, but plenty in Game Maker. You can get it from Yoyogames, and uses a DnD alternative to coding if you are new to programming languages. It does, however, have a coding function also, which is the most orthodox way for sage game makers to make their games/programs.

For those who are interested, get it from here:
http://wiki.yoyogames.com/index.php/O ld_Game_Maker_Versions

So, basically, I do know what I'm talking about when I talk about video games; I make them myself, just not in Flash. If you learned how to use it well, you could make Slugville in, say, a few weeks, tops with Game maker.

Aug. 30, 2008 | 7:28 PM ToasterDemon responds:

I am familiar with gm. I used it a while back before switching to flash for more of a challenge :P Thanks for the comments though

I think escape from slugville is legit. The score will continue to rise, no doubt about that. I think you should read what I said back to your comment on morsel mania. If you resubmitted, there would be no complaining by anyone. My game had bugs, I fixed them and resubmitted. The game was noticeably different, and people wouldn't have seen the newer version if I had not resubmitted.

its because most newgrounders are ON newgrounds because it has a lot of good games. they like THAT, because they get bored easy so they jump from game to game, barely ever going back to the one they just played.
my point: we have short attentions spans, and we like short and sweet most of the time.
